Witch’s Brew: Blackberry + Blood Red Orange Skinny Cocktail

Need a spooky inspired cocktail for Halloween this year? This refreshing and skinny cocktail is just what you need! I finished up this blog post as my mom and I were watching Hocus Pocus, so naturally I had to name this cocktail in honor of my favorite Halloween movie – the Witch’s Brew!

This cocktail is for everyone – no bartender skills required!

I’m typically a wine girl, but every now and then I crave a refreshing cocktail. But here’s the thing, I’m not a pro bartender. I do the bare minimum – can anyone else relate? I’ve developed a very basic recipe that I do variations of to create my cocktails at home. I usually mix a little citrus or fresh fruit juice, seltzer water, vodka, and garnish with fresh herbs or fruit. But for today’s Halloween inspired drink, I wanted to take it up a notch. I get a little overwhelmed though when a recipe calls for muddling, straining, or shaking. So after researching several recipes, I’ve created this skinny cocktail for the amateur bartender, like myself. All you need a small blender and you’re good to go!

Fresh ingredients are key

I consider my cocktails “skinny” because I don’t add simple syrup or calorie packed sodas to them. In an effort to make sure they are still refreshing, I always use fresh ingredients! For today’s drink, I bought fresh blackberries and limes. I wasn’t able to find blood red oranges (they’re out of season), but near the produce section of my grocery store they carry fresh squeezed juices! Be sure you get a juice that does not contain any added sugars.

Ingredients:

serves 2

  • 2 shots chilled vodka
  • 1/2 C fresh blackberries
  • juice of 1 lime
  • 1/2 C chilled blood red orange juice
  • 1 can plain seltzer water
  • orange slices and fresh blackberries to garnish
  • optional: 1/2 teaspoon maple syrup

Directions:

  1. In a small blender, blend the vodka, fresh blackberries, and lime juice to create a liquid mixture. If you really love sweet cocktails, you may add the optional maple syrup to this mixture. Pour into a measuring cup.
  2. Add the blood red orange juice to this blackberry mixture and mix.
  3. Evenly divide the blackberry + blood red orange mix among two glasses. Top with plain seltzer water. Note: as you add the seltzer water, the drink will foam. Do not over fill!
  4. Garnish with orange slices and blackberries!

Spooky Decor Details

I don’t decorate for Halloween at our house, but when we have kids, I will definitely do the whole sha-bang! For now, this little corner is about as spooky as I get. I bought this black mesh cloth and these black tinted wine glasses from Dollar Tree. This pretty hand-blown glass pumpkin is fro TJ Maxx, and I absolutely love it. You could easily make this more festive by putting dry ice in a bowl nearby.
